The Lead Program
Lead is designed so that throughout the year, members gain confidence and leadership skills and are then fully integrated into the BwB program at their high school.
The students learn about leadership and themselves through their work with global issues, teamwork, effective communication, goal setting, planning, job skills, and more.
The program also connects students with positive peer role models and an adult BwB staff mentor.
"Lead has provided me the tools to empower myself and in doing so my world has shifted focus from simply my family to the entire world." - Maria Morales, Lead member

Lead is a yearlong commitment that requires members to attend monthly workshops and work one-on-one with an adult BwB staff mentor and peer role models.
Through these workshops and meetings, Lead team members develop their skills in effective communication, teamwork, leadership, planning, finances, college preparation, job training and more.
Lead includes year-round leadership training and projects, including an intense six-week summer component, which includes:
- a one-week Service Learning Trip
- a one-week professional development session
- a four-week work internship where students work at local businesses
During the school year, Lead team members also contribute to their school's BwB program by attending meetings, service projects and fundraising activities.
Lead is offered to students in 9, 10 and 11 grades at high schools that currently host BwB's after-school program.
All Lead team workshops, trips and activites are paid for by Building with Books.
