Camillaya Primary School
Date of Completion: June, 1997
The community of Camillaya is located at about 9,000 ft. in the Cordillera Real, one of the highest chains in the Andes mountains. The 80 families that live in Camillaya are subsistence farmers, spending their days planting and harvesting crops and caring for livestock. The people of Camillaya are Aymara, an indigenous group who have lived in the Andes for centuries. They keep the Aymara culture alive through maintaining traditional dance, music, and food, and continuing to speak the Aymara language.
While in Camillaya, a BwB project coordinator brought with her a laptop computer and satellite phone which enabled children in Camillaya to communiate with students at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bronx, New York, via e-mail (pictured). In addition, she sent journal entries telling students about her adventures in helping to build the school and describing village life in Camillaya.
