BwB School Reports: Raymond, Haiti

Raymond is located in the middle of a vast mountain range, a three-hour walk uphill from the nearest road. While the views up here are spectacular, transporting materials is extremely difficult and that made this project one of the most challenging ever for BwB.

Fortunately, the people of Raymond subscribed to the Haitian saying "Men apil, chay pa lou." (Many hands make the load lighter). During the seven-month project, an average of 66 people came out to the work site every day, shattering all previous records for community participation. During the construction, they carried 320 (100-lb.) sacks of cement, 4,000 cinderblocks, and 14,000 bags of sand to the site, all by hand on the long walk up to the village. Much of the work was done by the students themselves, who traveled to collect materials before and after school.

United as one with help from Project Coordinator Jennifer Joyce and Field Coordinator Andre Marcel Charlot Fils, the villagers rose to the challenge and now have a beautiful, five-room school that will immediately benefit many of the nearly 600 students who go to school in the village.

The school was named for John H. Myers, a member of BwB Board of Directors and a long-time supporter.
