The village of Misomali lies only four miles from the Mozambique border in
Southeastern Malawi. Most of the villagers are subsistence farmers with
little or no formal education. They also face serious problems with drought
and disease. Before BWB’s arrival the village children crammed into the one
room thatch hut that served as their school.
In under five months the people of Misomali came together, hand molded
and fired thousands of adobe bricks and constructed their own schoolhouse.
The large, two-room structure can now accommodate the 400 students in grades
one through six, studying in shifts throughout the day.
