BwB School Reports: Kle-Sokoro, Mali

October 13, 2003

What a difference a few months-and a school-can make!

The villagers of Kle-Sokoro have seen the transformation first-hand. Before the Trek for Knowledge arrived in February 2003, the village only had a small, mud-brick schoolhouse. With the help of BwB students and teachers, they built a bricks-and-mortar school that is a big first step in educating the community. Students use it during the day, and adults enrolled in our literacy course use it at night.

The trekkies helped kick off the project in February, working alongside the villagers for two weeks. The people of Kle-Sokoro finished off the school in March, contributing more than 1,600 volunteer work days to the project.

Located just south of Bougouni in southern Mali, Kle-Sokoro is a large village with an estimated population of more than 3,000. They speak only one language: Bambara. The official religion in the village is Islam. Drum beating and singing is forbidden in the village for religious reasons.
