Shree Primary School
Date of Completion: December 1996
Before starting any project, Building with Books holds a Mass Meeting in
the village - an opportunity for the villagers to demonstrate their support
for the upcoming project. In Dharampur village over 500 people showed up in
an unprecedented demonstration of commitment. Dharampur is the most diverse
village BWB has worked in, with eight caste or ethnic groups. In a culture
in which the only the lower caste members tend to do manual labor this
project demonstrated this community’s willingness to put aside some of
their social differences and work side by side for their children.
In just over three months the community completed a six room brick
schoolhouse. The roof is a concrete slab on which 300 people worked for up
to ten hours to complete. Building with Books has now committed to using
only metal doors and windows in the schools because of Nepal’s serious
problems with deforestation and Dharampur was no exception. The students
have now moved from their mud hut school into the new building allowing
nearly twice as many students to attend.
