Rajipur is a village of subsistence farmers located six miles from the
Indian border. The people are all from "untouchable" caste groups
that are severely disadvantaged in Hindu society. "Untouchable"
communities in Nepal are generally the poorest with many people serving
as bonded laborers to others of higher castes. Determined to educate their
children despite the lack of support from outside the community, the
villagers constructed a temporary school out of scrap wood and tin and
petitioned the government for two teachers.
The community was anxious to build a permanent structure that could
accommodate all the village children. In just three months working with
BWB they were able to do just that and now have a six room brick
schoolhouse. There are now 250 students attending and five teachers. The
school is also used as a community center for literacy classes, women’s
groups and for various community meetings and festivals.
