                                                                  Student Voices: TREK TALK!
April 18, 2008
Dear readers,
The school-construction project has reached its 6th week, and the school is finished! This rhythm of construction was made possible due to team efforts and overall participation by the BwB Students on Trek from Michigan and the Community of La Balastrera.
On April 14 the community members from La Balastrera prepared themselves for the unique celebration that will last forever in the memories of those who attended this Inauguration Ceremony in the very heart of the local community.

There were 250 people at this ceremony and 70 children from the community of La Balastrera, more than we expected. Seeing this massive celebration makes you believe in the brotherhood that still exists and we thank BwB for their support.
There was a special petition from the community members to name this school "La Hermandad," which in English translates as "The Brotherhood." Why the brotherhood? Because the community felt very touched by the idea of giving from all the people who made this new school possible.
"The new school means a lot to our community. This program is creating better infrastructure for learning and shortening the distance traveled every day by our loved ones."
"We as parents recognized the effort and the commitment made by all the volunteers and all related parties involved in this project. I want to say thank you to the students, donors, the Mayor’s Office, and all community members who engaged in this project."

"My impression from this new school is that it is "Muy bonita." I love to go to school every day. Since the moment I found out that there was a plan for the construction of this school, I told myself that I will have it just around my neighborhood. What a wonderful gift. "
--Leonor Carmen Landeros Vanegas, 1st grade student, La Hermandad school
Overall, the community volunteers accumulated 400 work days, which was their contribution to the project. All these people from La Balastretrera worked very hard to accomplish their objective. We are grateful to the community workers and BwB for this new school for our children.
Sincerely,
Anibal J. Rodríguez Cruz
