BwB: International Programs

BwB School Reports: San Jose Del Ojoche, Nicaragua

April 21, 2006

A huge difference is now obvious in San Jose del Ojoche. BwB's 20th schoolhouse in Nicaragua is now complete and students are more than happy to be part of that difference. The road was not easy and we found quite a few surprises and challenges along the way that we had to overcome. But at the end, we all succeeded. This village now has the infrastructure needed for a better education and has gained a sense of pride by working together for a common goal and we are very proud of being part of that achievement.

The latrines were finished last week and the school has been painted. Women and men worked equally to fulfill that task of painting and it was a lot of fun for the villagers. This three-classroom school will be the new home of more than 100 students who did not have a place to learn before. They studied in private homes lent by families who live nearby. They lacked the conditions necessary to receive their daily classes in the proper way. This new school will solve many problems. Not only do they now have the infrastructure that they needed, but they will be able to extend their education program to the first two years of high school. Students are happy that this dream, so long waited for, finally came true.

Villagers are now preparing a nice inauguration ceremony to take place within the following weeks that will be attended by many. Representatives from the local government and the ministry of education are invited to attend as well as people from nearby villages. Traditional and modern dances are prepared and some of the main actors who played a role in the construction of this school will get a chance to talk about their experience. After that, food will be served for all the participants and music and dance will follow.

Thanks to all those who accompanied us into the mountains of the northern region of the country to be witnesses of this exciting venture!
