BwB's Online Program utilizes technology to extend Building with Books programming and sponsorship to teachers and students who want to take action and make a difference wherever they are.
The goal of BwB's Online Program is to engage youth in three core
activities:
intensive volunteer service in their community
sponsorship of an adopted village overseas
global education
In addition to taking
action in their own communities, BwB members raise money to help build schoolhouses in
developing countries.
To help you learn more about Building with Books and how to start an Online Program, we'll send you free videos and other start-up
tools.
Sponsorship of Your Adopted Village
BwB brings
youth from around the world closer together through the use of internet school construction reports, with stories and photos by the BwB project staff located in the villages where we build schools.
Project reports will enable your program to see the benefit and need for
its sponsorship work, while also fostering cultural education among your
members.
What You Do
BwB Online Program members engage in BwB's core activities of community service,
sponsorship, and cultural education. In order to achieve these activity goals, BwB
programs must participate in the following activity:
Community Service:
hold at least one large service project per term (minimum 2 per school year), involving
at the majority of your members. Programs are encouraged to do much more service
however, ideally on a weekly basis.
Sponsorship: hold at least one fundraiser per
term (minimum 2 per school year). 100% of the funds your program raises will be
used to help purchase the contruction materials for the schools we build.
Cultural Education: BwB will set up a cultural exchange between you and your
adopted village.
Starting an Online Club
An Online Program cannot function without Internet and email access. Students or teachers
may register an
Online Program at any time by using this online application. After a program is registered, we will send you a
free video about the program that can be used to help explain the program
in more detail and recruit other members, as well as a program handbook to help your
set up and run your program. All programs should have at least one teaching advisor in
place to help members carry out the BwB core activities.
Programs are also encouraged
to elect officers as outlined in the handbook you will receive. Once a teaching
advisor and members are in place, members should identify a community service
project to participate in, and choose at least one fundraiser that can be held to
raise money. You will be notified of your adopoted village (which will change each
semester) shortly after registering a program.
