Background of our School:
Our school is located in the southwest area of Detroit, Michigan. Our student body is about 1700 and is made up of at least 9 different nationalities. This is our first year as a BwB club. We are thrilled to be a part of this fun and helpful organization and are excited about all the projects we will be a part of this year! Here is a summary of what's going on in Western's BwB club.
Sponsorship:
We are excited to plan fundraisers because we want to help the people in Mali build their school. We plan on working hard to reach our sponsorship goal of $2000.00! This semester we are planning on having a bake sale, an international food fest, a Christmas bulb sale, and Holiday gift-wrapping.
Community Service:
We are also excited to volunteer in our community of Southwest Detroit and Michigan to make it a better place! We have a lot of different projects that we do every week. We are tutoring, mentoring, and baby-sitting at two elementary schools, two middle schools, one community center (LASED), and one community organization (Covenant House). Club members also volunteer at our local Greenhouse and help clean up Clark Park, which is across from Western International High School.
On top of the volunteering we do every week, we also have many one-time projects which have and will include:
Painting over graffiti
Cleaning up a vacant lot
Helping out at the AIDS walk
Helping Native American Centers (Joint Service Project)
Informing our community about the D.I.F.T. (Detroit Intermodal Freight Terminal)
Planting Trees
And Many More!
Cultural Education:
We are also excited to be learning about Mali and how they're building their new school that will serve at least 750 people! We also learned about Native Americans at the Joint Service Project and plan on learning about other cultures at our school and in our community as well. We are also going to be spending a day and hosting a day at school with our partner school in Bloomfield Hills, International Academy.
